Shoutcast max listeners

I was wondering what are the listening figures like for some of the biggest shoutcast stations as most people give me the impression they are broadcasting to hundreds and not thousands. I appreciate for the majority of internet stations a handful of listeners is the norm but I was interested how those with 1500+ listeners manage to stay on the air as I hear a single shoutcast stream can only feed about 500 listeners at once. When online stations grow beyond this figure do they look at a different broadcast system, maybe live365 (which I know nothing about, I'm just suggesting) or more than one shoutcast stream with some sort of load balancing?

Some larger stations turn to transcoding, which means making their station available at different bit rates depending on how people are listening, this tends to be on different instances of shoutcast, for example you could have a shoutcast server which is just a relay for other shoutcast servers if you wanted.
