We have no experience with the 'Roberts Stream 83' we are afraid. We recall other users in the past having similar issues with this device. Might be worth contacting their support team for assistance with this. http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/About_us/Contact_us/index.htm

Its also most likely that you are behind a firewall in the hotels. Unfortunately there is no real solution to this other than them opening up the firewall.

it is most likely a firewall set up for "strong security" as the hotel wants to minimise its bandwidth costs and only provide a basic service for business internet, not high quality audio.

It is often also in their interests to try and drive you to use "in room" entertainment services via the hotel television set even for radio, as they often attempt to monetize these (over and above your room price) by playing out a local music station on the TV set, whilst using the screen to show locally generated graphics to try and tempt you into using extra hotel services and/or local businesses with which they have a connection.

it is possible your IPAD is using a service that makes the radio traffic look like "normal Internet" to the hotels router, but the software in the Roberts radio is an embedded version of the normal radio player you would install on say a PC or other computer.
