Player(s) at a single IP reconnecting every 15 seconds.

If I go to "View Current Listeners" (or Shoutcast Admin) I see that an IP (a French IP) is showing as connecting a new connection every 15 seconds but none last for more than 60 seconds.

Therefore it is showing 4 connections, rotating every 15 seconds.

Player is shown as Lavf52.111.0 (which is also used by listeners who make longer connections).

It's not hurting us as we're on a fixed listener maximum & nowhere near that mostly, but...

I'm reluctant to ban the IP as maybe it's a badly setup player, or a cafe (mentioned elsewhere).

Anyone seen this before?

Hi Nico,

You could be right. If the user becomes a problem though you will just have to kick / ban the IP in your server admin section.

From what I understand, Lavf is the user agent that shows in our logs whenever someone tunes into a station through the pro capability of Tunein.com, the leading internet radio directory that caters to users with mobile apps. The pro capability gives the user the opportunity to record your stream for a later playback, but only through the mobile device.

I think that the reason your French IP(and some others) is disconnecting every 15 or so seconds is because they are having buffering issues. Mobile devices use a lot of memory, and if the connection isn't top notch, then the stream is going to keep cutting out.

And I see that Flower Raj Radio is listed on Tunein.com, so that may very well be your answer!

Thanks Gil,

Good to know we have a listing on Tunein.com, does that happen to every station broadcasting? We didn't apply to be listed there...

You can apply to be listed there yourself, or I believe it's possible that a fan can recommend it.

yes, they can do that although it can also lead to inaccurate info being shown about the station and Tune In doesn't always change it that quickly (not sure how they validate what is legit and what isn't or if that is even done by humans).

The good news is this is almost certain to be a legitimate user having network problems.

When I was last a paid broadcast engineer in the late 1990s, it was not uncommon (as I understand French) for French broadcast engineers who were grown adult men to telephone me and burst into tears (and I'd then have to comfort them in French) when their kit wasn't working - often caused by something strange the telephone company had done to a signal being sent between two sites via comms lines.

the same thing can happen in any other country especially in rural areas and mobile circuits are often only guaranteed for voice, SMS and short bursts of data used by some business applications. The telephone companies do not not like this sort of heavy sustained mobile data traffic unless it can make more money from it by some means and cover its costs, and in rural areas of European countries with complex geography, 3G is often only deployed after subsidies from the Government (some areas of the UK I work in don't get anything more than GPRS reliably and 3G reception is patchy).

France also borders on to other nations where the analogue TV is still not yet switched off, which makes deployment of 3G more problematic as if done too early it would cut across other countries telly signals.

Current EU legislation doesn't oblige a mobile ISP (or any ISP) to provide 24/7 access to streaming media, especially on lower price circuits (PAYG mobiles etc) which often get lower priority on the network unless its a 112 call...

Most interesting, so much so that I moseyed on over to your site & found lots to play & learn with; my radio background comes from passing the RAE at the age of 15 in 1958, had the callsign G3REC, I gave up ham radio before I was 30 since by that time I was troubleshooting oilfield electronics systems.

Life went on & now I'm retired & run my site & my little station.

I have someone tuned in from Salem, WI utilizing Lavf52.111.0 I have my settings to disconnect any listener after 2 hours, which is the minimum I can set it for.
