New station looking for all kinds of staff (not just music DJs)

Hello, I'm pleased to be able to announce that our new station, PVR, will be launching in the first quarter of 2022. Broadcasting from the historic Mill 3 in the beautiful Pleasley Vale on the Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire border here in the UK.

We are currently looking for a team of people to help us build what we hope will be the best and most professional sounding volunteer-run station in the UK. But to do it we need your help, either in person at our studios or virtually via the world wide web. You don't need any experience as we can train you for any role. All you need is some enthusiasm and a desire to have a go! Below is a list of some of the roles we curently need filling.
  • DIY capable individuals in the local area to help with our studio build and fit-out. This will be commencing in early February. Our studio is currently an empty space within the historic Pleasley Vale Mills. If you can wield a paint brush, fancy doing a bit of woodwork, or even just help move stuff in, your help would be much appreciated.
  • Admin staff to help look after all aspects of the station. Everything from answering the phone to selling on-air advertising. Depending on the task, some of this could probably be done remotely.
  • Technically minded people to help keep us on air. You don't need experience for this, just a willingness to learn. We aim to have a fantastic old-school analogue studio, but with digital computer-based playout. This will give us the great sound of analogue but use the best of modern technology to get the broadcast stream out there.
  • Producers to think up and help to make our shows. If you have a creative streak but don't want to go on air yourself then this could be the job for you!
  • On-air presenters. Note we call them presenters, not DJ's. That's because our on-air personalities will have plenty of chances to do much more than just playing records. Yes, there will be music shows, but there will also be talk shows, magazine shows and much much more. No matter much or how little experience you have, you'll be welcome at PVR. We want people with a personality who can build up a relationship with our listeners. Our aim is to be known as the friendly radio station. Presenters can be local or remote.
  • News / traffic / weather compilation and presentation. This is exactly what is says on the can! We will need people to compile news, traffic & weather reports and go on air to present the bulletins. Again, this can be a local or remote role.
As well as the above, we are also on the lookout for great syndicated shows. So if you already make a show or are thinking of starting one, please get in touch.

Our new website will be going live in the new year, but I wanted to put this post up now because I know a lot of people will be reading this forum over the Christmas holidays. So if you think you might be able to help or just want a bit more information, drop me a private message on here. If you include a contact number I'd be happy to give you a call for a chat.

Andy.

Andy:

A note to say hello and that I would like to be considered for a "pre-recorded" show. My show is titled "60's - 70's Garage Rock from California with Dickie Lee and The Iceman." I have been on the air for over six years and have over 317 shows in the can. I produce one to two shows per week. Many of the shows are themed that revolve around things such as: "The Summer of Love-1967," The Monterey Rock Festival-1967," "Woodstock," "Frat Rock," "One Hit Wonders," "Yacht Rock," "Motown," etc..Each episode is high energy and features the antics of Dickie Lee and The Iceman. You can clik on the following link to hear one of the episodes: "https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/rleekgb30636." If interested, you can contact me at: "rleekgb@comcast.net." Also note, that I can provide promos, station ID's, sweepeers if needed.

Dick Lee

This is just a quick update to let everyone know how we're getting on at PVR.

First, a big thankyou to everyone who has been in touch offering both syndicated and live shows. We are now working with Dick, who posted above and a few others to bring their shows over to us. If you've got a show then please feel free to drop me a line at andy.cooper2@gmail.com or PM me on here. Some people have asked if they can bring a show to us with sponsorship or embedded commercials. The answer is yes. Provided your sponsors and advertisers are not promoting anything that is illegal in the uk, then we can give you commercial space in your own show of up to 6 minutes per hour. You keep all the revenue from the first 2 minutes and then it's a 50/50 split with the station if you can fill the remmaining 4 minutes. If not, then we will fill the time for you. Please get in touch if you would like more information on how this works.

We are also looking for people who can work remotely and give a few minutes per day to help with news, weather, traffic and sports reports. This is ideal for someone who would like to go on air but doesn't have the time or equipment to make a full show. All you need is a computer with speakers and a microphone plus an audio editing program. We recommend Audacity as it's free and works on most operating systems. We would be asking you to record a 2-3 minute bulletin and upload it to our servers for playout a little later. Again, drop me a line to the e-mail above if you think you could help with this.

Finally, our physical studio build will now begin at Pleasley Vale in early February. There has been a slight delay becaue of the holiday season and our landlord wanting to do some work on the space before we move in. But once we are in (and hopefully the covid 19 situation will have subsided a bit) then we will also welcome live presenters to come and make their shows in our studio, with fully professional broadcast quality equipment. If you're a newbie that's no problem either. We can train you up and you'll be confidently working the studio in no time at all!

Hey Andy, good luck with your project! I know Pleasley Vale very well being born in Bolsover and going to school in Shirebrook. Would have loved to work with you, but moved away from the area many years ago. I'm a presenter on an FM station in Milton Keynes now.

You are going to be working from a fantastic building and in a great catchment area. Hope it goes well for you. I'll be keeping an eye out for your station.

Regards.

Thanks Ian. I actually live in Bolsover, but Pleasley Vale is the nearest I could find a decent studio space at a sensible price. It also sits nicely between Bolsover, Mansfield and Shirebrook and my hope is that we can attract some local businesses to advertise with us. I'm keen for it to be a fully functional station with a decent studio and offering the full radio package to listeners. I find back to back music stations quite borring, so PVR is going to have a lot of other things too. It's more than just music :)

I still come back to Bolsover regularly to see the fam. When you're up and running I'd love to come and look at the set-up (if that would be possible). :)

Yes, that's definitely no problem at all. We'll be happy to show people around and share knowledge with other stations and their staff. We are starting very small, but hope to start right. The plan is to sound professional to our listeners from day 1. It's also a bit of a pet project to show what can be done on a very limited initial budget. The most expensive thing bought so far is a couple of Soundcraft mixing desks that came second hand from E-bay. I'm also pleased to say there will not be a single computer running Windows in the entire place! We have a rock-solid Linux-based play out system to keep the computer geeks happy. I'd also like to have some old equipment in the studio, mainly so we can demonstrate how things used to be done. Cuing up vinyl and feeding cart machines from a rack are skills that seem to be dying out. It all gave stations of the 70s and 80s and 90s a unique sound, which is kind of what we're going for. We'll be recreating some of it digitally, but it would be nice to have the kit to do it for real when an old school radio DJ is at the helm.

very interested to know what you are using for Linux based playout, as the other chaps I work with at Ipswich Community Radio and Felixstowe Radio prefer to use Linux for the studio PCs...

The Playout system is Rivendell from Paravel Systems. It's a very powerful suite of programs that can do everything a radio station could possibly need and it's rock solid too.

Just a point of interest...If stations request a revenue split and a show is on more than one station then I foresee some difficulties.

It's not a revenue split in the way you think. Syndicated shows come to us with gaps for commercial breaks etc. We normally ask that shows are in 3 blocks of about 17 minutes each per hour, giving us 9 minutes per hour to fill. Some of that is taken up with news, but about 6 mins will be our own commercials. Of that 6 minuites we allow the producer of the syndicated show to have 2 minutes of commercial time to run ads they have brought with them. The show producer keeps whatever they have made from the 2 minutes of ads. We run that 2 minutes per hour free of charge. If every small station did this it should be possible for popular syndicated shows to make a reasonably good sum from offering an ad that could potentially run on hundreds of stations. It keeps syndicated shows free to the stations running them, allows show producers to get something back for their time and effort and allows advertisers to get a greater number of listeners. By sharing everyone wins something, rather than a few big fish winning everything.

If a show producer can fill more than 2 minutes of commercial time per hour they buy the other 4 minutes from us at 50% of our normal commercial rates, which are pretty low anyway.

Hi Andy. Thank you very much for sharing your business model. I think that is a fabulous compromise where all concerned have a crack at getting a little income. Cheers.

Good Afternoon

Was wondering if you were looking for any Reggae Djs on your station at the moment?

Ive over 25 odd years of experience on internet radio and play many many genres of music if required.

Heres my podcast site so you can hear my broadcasts.

Im based in the UK

I also syndicate a Chilled Zone Show which consists of 2 hours of Smooth Grooves/Slow Jamz split into 2 x 1 hour segments so idents and adverts can be applied in the middle if required. Its also non-generic.

Hi Chris,

Good news and bad news... First the bad news... We're not looking for any reggae DJs at the moment I'm afraid. Reggae and rap are two styles that don't really fit with what we'll be doing. We're more Radio 2 than we are 1 Extra. However, we would be very interested in doing something along the lines of your Chilled and disco type shows. I'll give you a ring to discuss the possibilities.

Thanks,

Andy.

Just letting everyone know things are now starting to progress at PVR. I've spent the last week building furniture and rebuilding one of our classic analogue mixers. It didn't have enough mic inputs as it stood, so I've added a couple more from another desk. A gate/compressor/limiter arrived in the post today, so that will be going in next. Then it will be time to start installing computers... One for running the playout, one for encooding and sending to the stream hosting server and another for presenters to keep an eye on the world outside via the internet and also to provide Skype and Cleanfeed link ups etc.

The only stumbling block so far has been dificvulty in finding an internet provider who can supply a line with enough bandwidth.

Still on the lookout for more shows and also live presenters, who can either do their show from home or use the studio. Even though the UK government is hell bent on ending all covid 19 restrictions no matter what the cost, PVR will be staying covid secure with social distancing and mask wearing where necessary remaining the order of the day. So if you've been thinking about getting back into broadcasting but you're worried about Covid, join us at PVR where safety of our team is always our primary concern.

Our studio is Located at Pleasley Vale Business Park, near Mansfield, on the Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire border. Forum members are welcome to visit to have a look what's going on. Just drop me a PM on here first to make sure I'm around to let you in.

The whole idea of PVR is to build a great sounding station, with a solid business model, on a shoestring budget. There will eventually be a full Youtube series all about the build, to hopefully inspire more people to start their own independent stations.

Andy.
