Doo wop is a style of rhythm and blues music that is much more vocal-based. The music is made-up of vocal group harmonies with very little or sometimes no instrumentation. A doo wop group is formed with a tenor lead vocalist who would sing the main melody whilst a backing vocal group (usually a trio or quartet) would sing the background harmonys. Doo wop derives from african american communities of the 1940s and it achieved mainstream popularity in the 1950s and 60s.
