Gothic or goth rock is a subgenre of alternative rock and post-punk music. It originated during the 1970's from english punk rock and post punk and became a big subculture during the 1980's. It is characterised by its darker mood and introspective and romantic lyrics. As well as using conventional rock music instruments, goth music incorporated synthesisers and drum machines into its sound.
